Foreign body- A corneal foreign body is an object usually metal, wood plastic or even an insect that is embedded into the cornea. Foreign bodies are usually very painful and cause a great deal of redness. Immediate treatment is the key especially in cases where metal is involved. Metallic foreign bodies generally will cause a rust ring and in many cases will require more treatment.
Treatment involves the removal of the foreign body in a variety of ways and antibiotic topical treatment to guard against infection. Many times a bandage contact lens or patching may be required. Unfortunately we see foreign bodies at McKinney Eyeworks on a regular basis but are highly trained in the treatment.
